The least expensive GPS Unit to use is a Garmin etrex (basic model). This unit weighs 8 oz and runs 22 hrs on a pair of AA batteries and is waterproof to 10m. But any GPS with a computer interface will do. This unit is available from from Calgary based GPS Central.
To use this with a computer you would also need a computer interface cable. CDN$34.95
Much fancier GPS units are available for about $525. A good pick would be the Garmin GPSMap 76C, or the 60C model. These units have 115 MB and 56 MB respectively for downloading detailed topographical maps with trails and creek crossings.
A great program to use for mapping and downloading tracks and waypoints to your computer is called OziExplorer. The program is shareware and is downloadable for free for evaluation purposes. Cost to register is US$75.00 and that allows for creation of digital maps.
The program is much more useful with electronic maps and electronic elevation data. We have all of this on CD-ROM, but it's copyrighted material. The digital maps can be purchased at Map Town in Calgary. The CD-ROM maps you want for this area are "E5223", "Calgary/East Kootenay 1:50,000". The price is CDN$99.95
So the total cost to get into the basics is about CDN$425 + GST + Shipping assuming you register OziExplorer and buy a GPS and cables.
To get a sense of what OziExplorer can do for you, and to get free maps, have a look at our Ozi Maps page.
To get the 3-D look (cool, but not really essential), you need to get the OziExplorer 3d add-in (US$25) and digital elevation data. When you get it all together, it looks something like this:
